The image (Sherman's march) underneath is an example of "total war" in sherman's march to the sea. this document shows the destruction of what the union caused to the south using the tatics of total war. there are fires, destroyed houses and striped railroad. This hurts the South economy and weaken them from supplies been destroyed and was not able to make it to the confederacy.
"Leave nothing to invite the enemy to return. destroy whatever cannot be consumed. let the valley be left so that crows flying over it will have thier rations along with them." -Uylsses S. grant
this quote represent total war because this is instructions to general Philip Sheridan to do total war in virgina. This is total war what uylsses s. grant is saying. "destroy whatever cannot be consumed." This is what the union did. They destroyed almost everything and taken any supplies. no ONE COULD GO BACK THERE AFTER WHAT THE UNION DID TO THE SOUTH.
